How Sidewalk Repairs Protect Foot Health
Sidewalk repair work begins this month, following the renovations that started at Bill Botts Fields in July. During Community Conversations, residents consistently named streets and sidewalks as priorities, and the adopted Capital Improvement Program reflects that feedback. From a foot and ankle perspective, this maintenance does more than improve how a neighborhood looks.
What the City Has Budgeted
The adopted budget directs funding toward streets, sidewalks, accessibility, and neighborhood infrastructure:
- Annual Street Pavement and Concrete Rehabilitation: $4.65 million
- Curb, Gutter and Sidewalk Replacement: $1.15 million
- ADA Sidewalk Improvements: $300,000
- Alley Reconstruction Citywide: $250,000
- Community Development Block Grant ADA Sidewalk Repair Project: $153,563
The accessibility line items deserve attention. Curb ramps and level transitions matter for wheelchair users, and they also help anyone moving with a cane, a walker, or a post-surgical boot. Recovery after foot surgery is easier on smooth, predictable ground.
Why Walking Surfaces Matter Clinically
A raised slab or a cracked panel forces the foot to load unpredictably. The ankle corrects. Sometimes it corrects too late. The CDC lists foot pain, poor footwear, and broken or uneven steps among the modifiable fall risk factors it tracks, and reports that more than one out of four adults age 65 and older falls each year.
Injuries Tied to Trip Hazards
We evaluate patients after stumbles on broken pavement more often than people assume. Findings tend to cluster:
- Lateral ankle sprains, frequently with lingering instability
- Metatarsal and toe fractures
- Plantar fascia strain from an abrupt heel-first landing
- Aggravation of bunions, arthritis, or an older injury that never fully resolved
Not every stumble causes damage. But pain that persists past a few days deserves an examination, because untreated ligament injuries have a habit of recurring. A sprain that seems minor early on is often why someone rolls the same ankle months later.
What You Can Do While Work Continues
Footwear matters more than most people expect on rough surfaces. A shoe with a stable heel counter and adequate outsole grip reduces the chance that a misstep becomes an injury. Walking routes are worth a second look at dusk, when shadows hide height differences between panels.
Patients living with diabetes or peripheral neuropathy should be especially careful near construction zones. Reduced sensation makes it harder to feel an edge before the foot rolls, and a small wound sustained in a fall can become a serious problem quickly.
Our team at SoCal Sports Podiatry works with active adults, older patients, and athletes throughout the region. A Culver City podiatrist visit usually starts with a straightforward conversation about where you walk, what you wear, and what hurts. On-site imaging then helps confirm whether a fracture or soft tissue tear is present.
Sidewalks will keep improving as this work progresses. In the meantime, if a trip or fall has left you with foot or ankle pain that is not settling down on its own, our Culver City, CA podiatrist can evaluate the injury and outline a treatment plan. Schedule a visit when you are ready.

Testimonials
Had a great experience overall! Dr. Sheth did an amazing job with my foot and has a great sense of humor as well! Highly recommend them.
Dr. Patel was very personable and kind to my 87 year old uncle. He took time to explain what was happening with his healing process and asked if we needed anything else. I appreciate his demeanor and expertise.
This is the most promise I've seen after four other surgeries. Both Dr. Patel and Sheth are great. They are fast - turned it around in less than a week and their surgery coordinator, Matty is amazing. This foot has been an unbelievable burden and I genuinely feel excited by how this seems like it's turning out...excellent service, smart and friendly doctors.
Scheduling an appointment and filling out the online patient form was very easy. Jordan the medical assistant who also did the scheduling was very cordial and helpful. Dr. Sheth was professional and friendly and never once pushed for unnecessary procedure.
